Gov. Nathan Deal Announces Top Issues for the 2015 Legislative Session


During the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's Eggs & Issues breakfast, Gov. Nathan Deal said in order for Georgia to remain as the No. 1 place to do business, it will require advancements in our transportation and K-12 education system, but also need to put an emphasis on developing a better workforce through a focus on higher education.

Rep. Jay Powell is Named the New State House Ways and Means Committee Chair


On January 14th, Rep. Jay Powell (R-Camilla) has been named the new Chairman of the State House Ways and Means Committee. He takes over the committee from retired Rep. Mickey Channell (R-Greensboro).

Agreement Reached for Solar Energy Third-Party Financing


On Tuesday January 14th before the state House Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications Subcommittee, Rep. Mike Dudgeon (R-Johns Creek) introduced the Solar Power Free-Market Financing and Property Rights Act of 2015. The Act would allow property owners to contract directly with third-party solar financing companies and avoid the up-front costs of purchasing and installing solar panels. This latest bill eases earlier concerns by Georgia Power and other utilities about the safety of new installations and their worries that the state would let in rival retail utilities.

Mercedes-Benz USA Relocates its Headquarters to Atlanta 


Gov. Deal announced on Wednesday January 13th that Mercedes-Benz USA is relocating its headquarters to the Sandy Springs area. The company will create at least 800 new jobs and invest roughly $74 million into its Headquarters.

U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan) and Mark Warner (D-Va), along with others introduced Startup Act 3.0 in 2013. Startup Act 3.0 creates both entrepreneur and STEM Visas for highly-educated and entrepreneurial driven immigrants to stay in the United States where their talent and innovative ideas can develop economic growth and create American jobs.
