(Atlanta, GA – June 2023) The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) is proud to announce the upcoming event “Black Music Month: History, Legacy, Technology, and Impact,” organized by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Media and Entertainment (M&E) Societies. This captivating panel discussion will delve into the rich history of black music, its profound impact, the technology driving music creation, and its influence on future generations. The event will take place on Thursday, June 29th, at 5:30pm, hosted at Comcast (2605 Circle 75 Parkway SE) in Atlanta.

The panel features esteemed experts in the music industry, including Catherine Brewton, Vice President of Creative at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), Atlanta-based music producer J Nauti, Robyne N. Gordon, Lead Contracts Manager at TYDAL, Dr. Paula Grissom Brougton, Assistant Professor at Spelman College, Africana Studies Professor, Dr. Lakeyta Bonnette-Bailey, Music professor and Producer at Illyass Recording, Booker Edwards, and the dynamic moderator and host of “Good News Gospel” on WPGN Radio, Twanda Black. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain insights from these industry leaders and engage in an informative discussion.

In addition to the panel discussion, the event will showcase a video tribute honoring Black artists who passed away in 2023, as well as live performances by renowned R&B Neo Soul singer Denell Porche, spoken word artist William Chatman (aka Free Will), and talented singer Is that SUMA.

Black Music Month, originally established by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 as a celebration of African American musical influences, holds a significant place in our nation’s cultural heritage. In 2009, President Barack Obama renamed the celebration African American Music Month to emphasize its broader impact.

Bebita Metellus, DEI Society Chair, emphasized the unifying power of music, stating, “Music has always been an art form that brings people together, regardless of their differences. As members of the DEI society, it is our responsibility to host this event for our members and the public. We aim to continue this legacy, educate others about the history and impact of Black music in our country, and show future generations, whose parents have been shaped by Black music, that these ‘new sounds’ originated within the Black community.”

Quincy Johnson and Louis Gump, Media & Entertainment Society Co-Chairs, underscored that technology-driven innovation has enabled the longstanding impact of Black music to expand in creative expression and audience appeal. “Georgia plays a central role in media and entertainment, locally, regionally, nationally and globally. Innovation through technology has increased the ability for Black musicians and producers to create and distribute a wide range of music that appeals to different audiences. The Media & Entertainment Society has a longstanding commitment to highlighting the voices that shape our world. This event provides a great opportunity for attendees to learn from industry experts and be entertained by a special selection of leading artists.”

This exciting event is a collaborative effort between TAG DEI and TAG Media and Entertainment Societies, two dynamic groups within the technology and entertainment sectors. It promises to be an enlightening and entertaining experience for all attendees.
