18 Companies Move on to pitch for a live audience on March 18
ATLANTA (March 4, 2014) –The Technology Association of Georgia, Venture Atlanta, and the Metro Atlanta Chamber announced today the 18 companies that were selected as semifinalists for the 2014 Business Launch Competition. More than 90 applications were received for the competition which boasts a $50,000 cash prize, one on one mentoring support, and a suite of services package including legal, marketing, office space and more. Additionally, the applicants were all recently invited to further pitch themselves to the selection committee at a “meet and greet event” This was the first year that the Business Launch Competition hosted this unique opportunity for the judges and applicants to interact before the competition got underway.
“Sometimes you can’t successfully sell your company simply through a one page summary, but meeting the person and seeing the passion changes everything. The Meet and Greet was a great opportunity for the judges to get to know the entrepreneurs behind the companies,” said Sig Mosley, Vice Chairman at Imlay Investments, Inc and the program chair, “This allows us to put a face and personality to the company and to do a better job selecting who moves forward in the competition.”
The Meet and Greet is not the only new addition to the program, which is in its 9th year. The 18 companies selected to continue in the program will receive mentorship over the next few weeks until the morning of March 18 when they will present to a panel of judges and a full audience at the Georgia Tech Research Institute. This is the first time this competition has held its semifinals open to the public and will feature an audience vote component. At this event, eight companies will be selected to pitch head-to-head at the finals event on the evening of May 5.
The semifinalists represent startups in a variety of industries, from bioscience to electronic payments to travel.
The companies who were selected as semifinalists are:
- Ampersand Group, Inc.
- Exploractiv Inc.
- Niche Video Media LLC
- ParkRent Cycles
- TSecurePay LLC
- Vault Stem Cell
This statewide program supports the creation and growth of new companies to aid in strengthening and expanding Georgia’s strategic high-tech clusters. In the next three to five years, projections show technology companies will invest more than $1 billion in Georgia.
Event committee member and judge, Jeff McConnell commented, “The number and variety of businesses increased greatly this year and the passion the entrepreneurs have for their business is amazing. With programs like Venture Atlanta and the Business Launch Competition, we can continue to show our support to Georgia’s tech start-up community and attract increased venture funding.”
