TAG/SPSU Information Technology Seminar Series

TAG/SPSU Information Technology Seminar Series

TAG and SPSU are have set some dates for a new seminar series that will educate participants on Information Assurance and Security, IT Governance, IT service delivery through ITIL, and Quality Assurance and Six Sigma to name a few topics. These seminars will be presented by SPSU's professors at the TAG offices and SPSU alternately.

Update: This program grants CEU credits. Each session is .4 CEUs, all 4 is 1.6 CEUs.

March 7th: IT Service Delivery through ITIL

10am - 2pm - @ Southern Poly

About the seminar:
This seminar will cover the basics of the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), a set of standards for increasing IT business value through IT service management. It will cover the basics of ITIL, including its emergence in the UK, its relationship to other quality standards, including ISO, and the process areas covered. It will also provide an in-depth discussion of the advantages and drawbacks of the adoption of the ITIL standards. This seminar is aimed at executives with responsibility for IT service delivery.

About the presenters:
Garfield Campbell
Garfield Campbell has eighteen years of experience in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Industry where he has performed in the technical expert and managerial roles. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Systems at the University of the West Indies (UWI) with a focus on Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Information Systems Quality. Prior to his studies, Mr. Campbell worked with IBM where he has successfully executed several technical and management roles including Services Manager and Solutions Architect. Garfield holds a Master's in Management Information Systems and Bachelor's in Computer Science from UWI.

Han Reichgelt
Han Reichgelt is Dean of the School of Computing and Software Engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University. He joined SPSU in August of 2007, having previously been a professor at Georgia Southern University and the University of the West Indies, Jamaica. His research interests include business value attainment through the use of IT and IT service delivery quality. He has consulted extensively with a range of commercial and non-commercial organizations, both in the US and overseas, and has conducted a wide range of professional development seminars and workshops. Han holds a Master's in Philosophy and a Bachelor's in Psychology from the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands and a PhD in Cognitive Science from The University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

March 21: Techniques for Successful Implementation of Enterprise Architecture

About the seminar:
IT has become interwoven into the fabric of virtually every organization, meaning that strategic planning and assessing the strategic value of IT have become enterprise-wide endeavors. Creating and maintaining an enterprise architecture (EA) has shown great benefits for managing this ever increasing scale and complexity of IT in the organization. This seminar will focus on the key areas that must be considered if an organization is going to be successful in implementing EA. The topics covered will include: basic concepts and best practices of EA; the human element in EA planning; communication; an EA maturity model and the importance of continuous assessment and improvement in successful EA. A short exercise will focus on the development of an EA Roadmap for progressing from the "As-Is" to the "To-Be" state. This seminar is aimed at executives with responsibility for strategic planning of IT systems in the organization and ensuring that the organization's IT delivers value.

About the presenter:
Dr. Doris Jean Rash-Konneh
Dr. Doris Jean Rash-Konneh was a project manager in the Enterprise Architecture Section for the Enterprise Technology Planning Division of the Georgia Technology Authority (GTA). Her extensive professional career spans a number of diverse work environments including state government, private industry, and technical/higher education. She joined GTA in 2001 as a Strategic Planning Consultant with a focus on cross-agency, consolidated IT strategic planning. She later became the Executive Staff Analyst and project liaison for the Georgia Digital Academy, a collaborative initiative with Southern Polytechnic State University. In addition to her work as enterprise architecture project manager, Dr. Rash-Konneh has extensive experience in higher education, having been a research assistant, project director, curriculum specialist, and adjunct instructor at Georgia State University, chairperson of the Business Division of North Metro Technical College in Acworth, as well as interim chairperson of the Computer Information Systems Department at West Georgia Technical College. Her formal education includes a B.S. from Tennessee Technological University, a Master's in Business Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership/Business Management from Georgia State University.

April 4: Software Project Management

About the seminar:
The seminar will cover software project management cycle from project planning through project adjustment. Specifically, the topics include (i) Project Planning: project goal setting, project estimation, work breakdown structure, and risk management; (ii) Project Organization: organizational structure, recruiting, process, tools, and measurements; (iii) Project Monitoring: data collection, status meetings, project status analysis (including Earned Value analysis), and status communications, and (iv) Project Adjustments: project parameters of adjustments, trade-offs, and release team approach.

About the presenters:
Dr. Frank Tsui
Dr Frank Tsui has more than 30 years of experience in the Software and IT industry, and is currently a faculty member in the School of Computing and Software Engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University. His past experiences include compiler writing for RCA, business applications programming for BlueCross BlueShield, operating system development and software product management with IBM Corp., Director of Software Development with MARCAM, Vice President of Technology with PSInet/Metamor, and Chief Technology Officer with RiverLogic Inc. He is the author of a book entitled "Managing Software Projects" and the co-author of "Essentials of Software Engineering," both published by Jones & Bartlett Publishers. His formal education includes a BS from Purdue University, MS from Indiana State University and a PhD from Georgia Tech.

Susan Vande Ven
Susan Vande Ven has more than 20 years of industry experience, including 10+ years in software development and IT. She is currently on faculty in the School of Computing and Software Engineering at Southern Polytechnic State University. Her software and IT experience includes software development at Sprint, IT support process engineering at Hewlett Packard, and project management of enterprise support system implementations for Agilent Technologies. Her formal education includes a BS in Chemistry from Purdue University, an MBA from University of Akron and a MS in Computer Science from Georgia Institute of Technology.

April 18: IT Governance

About the seminar:
This seminar will cover the foundations of IT governance and the need for a rational approach to IT governance within every organization. Utilizing the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) as a framework approach, this seminar will provide IT managers, auditors, and IT users with a set of generally accepted measures, indicators, processes and best practices with the objectives of maximizing the benefits of using information technology while also avoiding common pitfalls from unbalanced or non-existent governance. Delivery will be through a case study and interactive exercises. This seminar is aimed at executives with responsibility for developing and maintaining appropriate IT governance and control in an organization.

About the presenters:
Rich Halstead-Nussloch
Rich Halstead-Nussloch is Professor of Information Technology at Southern Polytechnic State University. After a career in teaching in the 1960's and 1970's at Macalester College, the University of Michigan and Stevens Tech, he became a senior research scientist/engineer for IBM, concentrating on the design and continuous improvement of IBM products and services with a focus on research, human-computer interaction and the human factors engineering of hardware, software, documentation, and user interfaces. He now teaches computing courses at SPSU and is the coordinator of the Master of Science in Information Technology degree and the program director of the Georgia Digital Academy. Having recently co-authored the ga.gov Usability Style Guide, he advises industry, education, non-profits and government in research, quality, business processes, project management and all aspects of managing IT and computing and their governance.
