05/01/2008 "How Can a Maturing Tech Company Position Itself for a Capital Raise?" Panel Discussion Moderated by Dave Chambless

As an entrepreneurial company moves through its life cycle, its capital structure morphs.  In the early days, cash is all about getting started.  This phase soon moves into cash being needed to gain traction in the marketplace to establish the company as a viable entity.  As the company continues to mature, its capital needs evolve as well.  Often, the entrepreneur faces the task of raising capital to fund the business in its product development, and sales efforts.  So, what does the owner of a maturing tech company do to position itself for a capital raise?

06/05/08 Repeat performance – The Serial Entrepreneur Story Tycho Howle – Founder and Chairman, nuBridges & Leland Strange – Chairman, President and CEO, Intelligent Systems Corp

Some say, it’s in their DNA, when referring to why certain people are motivated to start and build one company after another.

Tycho Howle and Leland Strange are such people. Tycho Howle founded nuBridges, Inc. in the spring of 2001 and currently serves as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Tycho is a pioneer in the eBusiness arena as evidenced by his founding of Harbinger Computer Services in March 1983.  Howle grew Harbinger to become a world-class e-Commerce firm with more than 1,000 employees, 40,000 active customers, and annual revenues exceeding $155 million. Tycho served as both Chairman and CEO for most of his 17-year tenure with Harbinger, and led the company through its many phases of growth including an IPO in 1995. Leland Strange has founded several successful ventures over his illustrious career, including Quadram Corporation, in 1980.  Quadram pioneered the enhancement products industry and was one of the fastest growing electronics companies in the early 1980s.  Today, in addition to his leadership role with Intelligent Systems, Strange serves on the board of directors for Allied Holdings as well as several privately held companies.

Both Howle and Strange are inductees into Georgia’s prestigious Technology Hall of Fame.

The takeaway from this session will be gaining valuable knowledge on leadership attributes and company characteristics necessary for building multiple successful companies.

10/02/08 Identifying and Seizing Upon Market Trends Mike Eckert, former CEO of The Weather Channel and Pathfire, Inc.
Too often technology start-ups fall into the trap of becoming "technologies chasing a market" and evolve into unsuccessful business endeavors.  In other cases start-ups evolve into a real business entity only to soon be overtaken or dis-intermediated.  Yet other technology start-ups become successful businesses.  In today's complex world, as entrepreneurs plan their technology start-ups, beyond only considering technology trends or their own assumptions, they must also consider a number of other types of trends, or they run the risk of missing potential opportunities.  As importantly, they also run the risk of missing business risks and threats.  In this program, comments will be shared about useful techniques to identify trends and how to seize on these; as well as a review of many of the latest technology, societal, economic and marketing trends of the future which entrepreneurs should consider.
