What is Data Governance?

There are many definitions for data governance in the marketplace. Simply put, however, we believe that Data Governance is the formal and informal process of managing data within an organization. That’s it. Whatever we do to control our data – good or bad – is Data Governance. There are many aspects to a successful Data Governance program. These vary from organization to organization. In all cases, however, data governance is concerned with Policy, Procedure and Audit. Other subjects that can fall under the scope of data governance include Data Architecture, Master Data Management, Master Data Maintenance, Data Security, Data Quality, Business Intelligence, Electronic Document Retention, Data Migration and Integration (governance), Enterprise Reporting and Data Warehousing.

What is the value of Data Governance?

But the real question is, “Why?” Why create a formal program for managing our data? To answer the question, we must realize that, at the core of Data Governance is a process. Processes provide both consistency and repeatability. Without a data governance process our data quality is not sustainable and quickly degrades. Data quality can be controlled, to a degree, when it is first created. However, the relevance and accuracy of that data often decays over time due to changes in our business, acquisitions and other factors affecting the rules associated with the data. Customers go out of business or move. Vendors change their product composition. Corporate growth can force new rules and regulations on us that require adapting quickly to avoid costly penalties.

If ungoverned, all of these changes will quickly cause the information we own to become obsolete, undermining the fundamental value data provides to the organization – TRUST. When we trust our data, we create the foundations for success:


Trust – without trust, we have chaos. Every decision we make is based on data. If our data isn’t trustworthy, how confident can we be in our ability to make decisions?

Stability is the ability of an object to maintain equilibrium after displacement. Accurate, consistent data enables consistent processes, which, in turn, ensures business stability. Our ability to react to change is based primarily in our data and the processes by which it is maintained.

Compliance is conforming to rules, specifications and/or standards and policies. Implementing Data Governance starts with Policies, standards, rules and definitions followed by processes to enforce, automate and monitor them.

Performance: Ultimately, Data Governance can drive significant benefit to the organization:

Austen Onyett- Senior Data Leader- IHG


Austen Onyett is a Customer Database Manager who works with IHG. He owns enterprise customer data, MDM, and data quality platforms. In addition, he founded the Customer Data Governance Team for IHG in 2016 and heads up metadata initiatives for the company. Recently, as part of data governance oversight for IHG, he has been driving GDPR awareness for the business as well as partnering with internal Legal and IT Teams to operationalize pertinent aspects of GDPR to the overall company.  Austen holds a Technical Degree in Paramedicine with Seminole State College and is a veteran of the USAF.


Tyler Johnson- CEO- PrivOps


A senior executive and thought leader with more than 20 years of experience, Tyler has a unique perspective that has helped him build technologies, teams and processes to accelerate innovation.  Early in his career, Tyler invented an automated testing platform for HP's most advanced servers and was awarded 22 US patents.  Later, Tyler grew Rackspace’s $300 Million VMware based private cloud services line to over $600 Million while serving as product leader and strategic alliance leader.  Most recently, Tyler launched PrivOps, an ATDC Accelerate startup focused on creating technologies to support personal privacy while building secure, compliant applications in the cloud.  Tyler holds a B.S.E.E. from Florida Atlantic University, an MBA from Southern Methodist University and lives in Alpharetta, GA, with his wife and two sets of twins.


Jodi Daniels- Founder and Privacy Consultant- Red Clover Associates


Jodi Daniels is an online data strategy and privacy expert with more than 19 years experience in privacy, marketing, strategy, and finance roles. She has worked in multiple industries such as Financial Services, Automotive, Media, and Retail for Bank of America, Cox Enterprises, The Home Depot and Deloitte. As Founder of Red Clover Advisors, Ms. Daniels assists companies at all stages of privacy maturity with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, operationalizing privacy, digital governance and online data strategy. Ms. Daniels has significant expertise with digital media data strategy and privacy.



Mary Levins - ‘Value through Data’ Industry Leader; Engineer; Strategist

Mary Levins is a known expert in enterprise data management and data governance by bringing value and visionary inspiration to organizations.  She has been applying Industrial Engineering principles to data strategy solutions and optimizing complex data processes for more than 20 years.  Mary is the founding principle of Sierra Creek Consulting, a small firm that delivers value through data.  Areas of specialty include Value through Governed Data, Value through Enterprise Data (including data knowledge management, MDM, and Data Quality), and Value through Voice of the Customer Data (including Social Media reviews, Call Center, and other unstructured data).
