Money on tap for electronic health records: Stimulus funds would help replace paper medical files.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution By Kristi E. Swartz
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2009/05/15/healthstim0515.html
Hurricane Katrina illustrated what can happen when medical records are on paper instead of stored on a computer.
They washed away, rendering thousands of people unable to get prescriptions, notify doctors about allergies or receive medical help.
“We have to bring our best technology to bear in the health care system,” said Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. surgeon general and director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Federal stimulus money is available for health care providers in Georgia to convert paper medical records to electronic ones, Satcher and others said Thursday at Georgia State University. Though such technology has been available for years, fewer than 4 percent of doctors have made their medical records completely electronic, said Janet Marchibroda, chief health care officer for IBM, who said the stimulus dollars will help with some of the conversion challenges.
Stimulus money will be funneled through Medicare and Medicaid programs as well as through the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Marchibroda cautioned that it be spent wisely.
“We could really mess this up by just pushing a lot of money out there but not focusing on improving health information technology,” she said.
Georgia’s Department of Community Health has received $339.6 million in the first batch of stimulus money. Rhonda Medows, the state’s health officer and commissioner of the community health department, said the agency is waiting for federal guidance on how it can use that money to reimburse health care providers who buy an electronic health record system.

Six Degrees from Dave
“....Six Degrees: What industry events have you been participated in?
Ronnie: I have for the past year been on the board of the Technology Association of Georgia Recruiting Society. My responsibility is to recruit speakers to speak at our monthly event and introduce them to the attendees. I have only one publication in which I wrote an article on “The Power of Networking for Yourself” for the SourceCon Newsletter. I attended SourceCon 2008 and just returned from ERE Expo in San Diego. I have always wanted to go to ERE Expo and finally made the investment. Both of these events were incredible experiences for me. I am planning on attending the Social Recruiting Summit and want to attend a Kennedy conference soon as well. I am also a member of SHRM-Atlanta as well…
Six Degrees: What types of training in sourcing/recruitment are available to you and have you taken advantage of?
Ronnie: In Atlanta specifically, we have a strong network of recruiters who always get together be it a dinner, happy hour or a scheduled recruiting meeting. Everyone in our market is willing to share their knowledge and I feel this is some of the best training I have received. We have the Technology Association of Georgia Recruiting Society which serves as a training tool. Then on the national level you have conferences and the many webinars that are provided by a number of trainers. I have taken advantage of them all!”

Virtuous Cycle
I had the good fortune to be a part of the WebChallenge 2009 team and this past Wednesday, we held the awards dinner. WebChallenge is a state-wide high school technology contest conducted by the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and the TAG Education Collaborative (TEC). This contest is designed to inspire the kids to learn more about technology and pursue that field of study in high school and college. You can get more information on the website.
The theme of the competition this year was, “Free Your Community!” Students were challenged to use free technologies that effectively address a need in their local non-profit community. So, the use of things like Facebook, Google Apps, Website Baker and JQuery were encouraged to provide something of use to their school or other non-profit entity.

Chris Klaus couldn’t be there for the event, but I hear he made a last minute donation which helped make the event possible this year.
