Welcome to SL #37! There has been quite a bit of discussion over the past year or so about the possibilities of a Y-Combinator type venture fund here in the Southeast. After a few failed efforts (notably Boostphase), we finally have one off the ground here in Atlanta.  David Cummings and Sanjay Parekh, two of the founders of Shotput Ventures join us for a chat about this new venture model, the Atlanta early-stage scene, and other things that melt in the sun.

Mike brings the heat and rolls the bus over a group of entrepreneurs that just can’t seem to understand the value of someone else’s time. Another great selection of listener emails and a dash of StartupLounge humor to top it all off. Enjoy!

Shownotes and Interview Questions:

As usual, we had lots of related follow-up questions and side discussions, but here is a good sampling of the questions we asked on the show:

Give us your 30-second elevator pitch
Have you modeled yourselves after any other funds or investors with a similar profile?
Why do we need Shotput Ventures here in Atlanta/Georgia? Why did you start Shotput?
Are you investing only in Atlanta-based or Georgia-based companies?
Talk about the Shotput Ventures model.  Take us through your process?
How can such a small amount of cash ($15,000-$20,000 per venture, depending on team size) make an impact?
How did you come up with a 5-10% share?
Where are you getting your deal flow?
How many submissions have you had so far?
How do you evaluate the opportunities?
Where are you in the fund operating process?  Are you meeting the timeline provided on your site?
What are the keys to making Shotput Ventures successful?
Now that you’re investors, what are you learning about the market or the investing business?
Can you talk a bit about how you recruited the handful of principals behind Shotput?
How does setting a finite end date (August 10) alter or impact your investing model?  Why do you have a finite end date?
Is the economy affecting your model at all?
If this is successful, will there be a Shotput II?
How is the rest of the venture community responding?
What will define success for Shotput Ventures?
What are your thoughts on the Atlanta startup scene?
Listener Emails Read and Answered on the Show:

Dale: Gentlemen, first off I want to thank you for all that Startuplounge does for the community in Atlanta.  I appreciate the efforts and look forward to thanking you personally at the upcoming February event.  I am getting very close to launching my own startup as a first-time entrepreneur.  I know that bootstrapping will only take me so far, and I will probably need to raise a small round of outside capital at some point.  I know that before any investor puts their cash into a deal they go through what is called “due diligence”.  I am petrified of this, as I have never been through it before.  Can you shed any light on this process, and specifically what I’m going to be in for?

BigSkyCountry: If all I have is an idea, is there a resource such as an incubator that will help me put together the technical team to help bring it to life?

“YellowJacket” Mark: Scott and Mike I love this podcast!  … my question: what makes a great company name these days?  I’m stuck, please help.

Roberto: Everyone says that a “down” market is a great time to start a company, especially if you have the wherewithall and the means to float the business.  But what if you don’t have the cash?  Should I just go get a steady day job right now and play the waiting game until the economy stabilizes and I have some more cash available personally?  I’m worried that investors are on the sideline right now and won’t be interested in my deal.

Talking Stimulus and Healthcare by reiboldt on February 27, 2009

As you may recall, this past January I chaired and moderated an event put on by the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), where we brought together market thoughtleaders from the healthcare industry to discuss the impact of the financial crisis on healthcare.  We got such overwhelming support and attendance that we have teamed up again to put on a follow up event, where we will address the impact of the economic stimulus on the healthcare sector.  The event will be headed up by TAG, the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA Georgia Chapter), and the Coker Group’s Economic Stimulus Task Force.

“The Economic Stimulus and Healthcare IT,” which will take place on March 12, 2009 at TAG’s headquarters (click here for more information), is the second in a series of events sponsored by TAG addressing healthcare and the financial crisis, and the first event teaming up with Coker’s Stimulus Task Force, launched to the public last week.  The event will feature a roundtable discussion led by a powerhouse panel of healthcare market and policy experts, including among others Jeffery Daigrepont (SVP, Coker Group), Sean Hogan (VP, IBM Healthcare Delivery Systems), and Wayne Oliver (Project Director, Center for Health Transformation).  The objective of the discussion will be to address the hard facts about the economic stimulus, and how policies shaping in Washington and in State Capitols throughout the nation will impact the adoption of healthcare IT in the near future.

Click here to register for the event or feel free to contact me for more information.  Also, you can find the announcement of the event from Coker here.

Research Reveals Impact of Management Values on High-Tech Organizations

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

TechLINKS

The manner in which managers define the values of an emerging organization and how they put these values into practice have a measurable impact on an organization’s performance. This is one of the key findings of nationwide market research conducted by Jake Messersmith, PhD, Assistant Professor of Management at George Washington University and recently presented to The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) Finance Society.

“My research analyzed the key factors that contribute to the success or failure of developing organizations,” said Dr. Messersmith. “We examined three key influences that impact the performance of an emerging firm: human resource policies and practices, the philosophy of partnership with employees and the entrepreneurial drive and orientation that are embedded in the organization’s makeup.”

“This research is particularly relevant to the many emerging high-tech companies throughout Georgia,” said Don Campbell, President and CEO of Virtual Management Technologies and moderator of the seminar. “Dr. Messersmith’s research validates that value-based management systems can yield measurable improvements in operations ranging from increases in sales and lower turnover to improvements in innovation.”

The research study titled “Transforming Caterpillars in Butterflies: A Study of Emergent Organizations” confirms that sales performance and levels of organizational innovation are positively impacted by a combination of high performance work systems and a partnership philosophy (with employees). Further, the combination of an entrepreneurial orientation in the organization and employee partnership will help drive a high performance work system.

The study was based on interviews with executives of emerging high-tech organizations across the country. The study highlights three areas of a management system:

Entrepreneurial Orientation – a firm-level value emphasizing continued innovation, risk-taking and pro-activity assessing market trends.
Partnership Philosophy – a managerial value emphasizing collaboration and open communications between business owners/managers and employees.
High Performance Work Systems – the constellation of managerial practices related to selection, training, development and compensation that are designed to attract, retain and motivate employees.

“My research concluded that firms combining a greater utilization of high performance work systems with an entrepreneurial orientation achieve higher levels of sales growth, one of the ultimate goals of an emerging organization,” said Dr. Messersmith. “Respondents had an average net sales volume of $2.2 million and had been in business an average of 7 years. Results of the research indicate that adoption of a High Performance Work System yielded a 7.7 percent increase over and above standard sales growth, and use of employee partnership systems increased sales growth by 7.9% over and above standard growth metrics.”

Dr. Messersmith summarized the key takeaways for the TAG Finance Society audience as follows:

Employment practices matter, even in small firms
Merit-based compensation and promotion are particularly important
Emphasizing a partnership between owner/managers and employees matters
Firms with an entrepreneurial posture benefit the most from using High Performance Work Systems
A competitive advantage can be gained through a system of practices that help to select, retain, and motivate employees

Following Dr. Messersmith’s presentation, a panel including Dr. Michael S. Salvador, a member of the faculty at the Michael H. Coles College of Business, Kennesaw State University and responsible for the development and delivery of Executive Education Programs, and Lance Weatherby, Venture Catalyst at the Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), a part of Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute provided perspective and analysis of the research.

Earth Times Press Release

ATLANTA - (Business Wire) TAG Marketing, a society of the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) and Georgia’s premier organization for technology marketing events and networking, announced today the call for entries for two prestigious annual award categories: the 2009 Technology Association Marketer of the Year (TAMY) Awards and the Technology Marketing “Executive of the Year” Award. The deadline to submit entries is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17. Winners will be announced at the TAG Marketing Awards Breakfast on Thursday, May 21. For more information or for downloadable applications and nomination forms, visit http://www.tagonline.org/tamy-awards.php.

“TAG Marketing recognizes the importance of the efforts, leadership and foresight of the individuals who have made a positive impact not only on their own company’s results, but also on the advancement of technology marketing as a whole,” said Allan Hess, TAG Marketing chair. “Technology marketers must continually innovate and reinvent to stay on top of their game.”

The TAMY Awards are particularly relevant in today’s competitive landscape, noted Hess, with companies and agencies alike challenged to demonstrate real return on investment for every marketing dollar. Judged by peer marketing professionals, TAMY winners represent the “best of the best” in creativity and marketing leadership from some of Georgia’s best known, and soon-to-be best known, technology brands.

The 2009 TAMY Awards will recognize both small and large organizations that have demonstrated significant and measurable accomplishments in one of five categories. The company or its affiliate must be currently active in the technology industry in the state of Georgia, and the marketing program entered must have been managed entirely from Georgia. In addition, the programs/tactics submitted must have been carried out primarily during the 2008 calendar year.

“We continue to be amazed at the ingenuity and results achieved by our TAMY Award applicants,” said Stein Soelberg, TAG Marketing awards co-chair. “Participation in the TAMY Awards hit an all-time high last year and we expect even more interest for our eighth annual awards program this year.”

An award will be given to one emerging firm (revenues less than $10 million) and one large firm (revenues greater than $10 million) in each of the following five award categories:

Corporate Repositioning;
Marketing for Growth;
Marketing to the “C” Level;
Customer Marketing; and
Marketing Tactic
Winners of the 2008 TAMY Awards included IP2Biz, Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), Vitrue, Cbeyond, Inc. and Xerox Mortgage Services.

Additionally, Frank M. Grillo, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Cypress Communications, was honored with the Technology Marketing “Executive of the Year” Award for his outstanding leadership, career achievements and positive impact on technology marketing in Georgia.

2009 represents the fourth year that TAG Marketing will name a Technology Marketing “Executive of the Year,” a recognition that is based on peer nominations for a marketing executive who has clearly demonstrated outstanding leadership, either at a technology company or in a technology role within a non-technology corporation.

The deadline to submit entries and nominations is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17. Winners will be announced at the TAG Marketing Awards Breakfast on Thursday, May 21. For more information or for downloadable applications, visit http://www.tagonline.org/tamy-awards.php.

By Charles Bannister
Board of Commissioners Chairman

..... And our economic development program continues to serve as a model for smart growth.

In June, Suniva announced it was moving its solar energy operation to Norcross, spending $75 million to open a 60,000-square-foot facility. The Technology Association of Georgia named Suniva one of the state’s 10 most innovative technology companies. Suniva will be creating 100 new jobs here in Gwinnett County. We worked with our Chamber of Commerce, the state and Partnership Gwinnett to recruit this exciting, forward-thinking business to our county. We’re truly excited to have them call Gwinnett home.

A couple of months ago, NCR Corporation announced it would locate its new Center of Excellence in Duluth. Partnership Gwinnett tells us NCR, a Fortune 500 company, has already created 100 new jobs at the Satellite Boulevard location, and they are still hiring. They will be adding 200 more jobs over the next two years. Welcome to Gwinnett, NCR.

We were also able to attract and retain smaller companies that collectively brought several hundred quality jobs to the county......

Messersmith shared his expertise on understanding the role that managerial values and practices play in the performance of high-tech start-ups and discussed the factors that contribute to the success, or failure, of developing organizations.
