TAG and GCLA will host a second Connecting Georgia’s Companies event in November and are now requesting information from companies interested in presenting to the audience of CIOs and other tech leaders. Georgia-based vendors who have innovative solutions to the “focus areas” selected by GCLA’s members are asked to complete the online request and submit it no later than October 13th. Web 2.0 and Mobility, Cloud/XaaS, and Security/Compliance were recently selected as some of the biggest challenges for Georgia’s CIOs. Those companies whose RFIs are selected will have the opportunity to present on November 11th and will have their company’s information displayed online.
TAG and GCLA will accept up to four TAG-member companies from each category to present their solutions to a prestigious group of Georgia CIOs, CTOs and other leaders. Prior to the program, the selected companies will be given support and counsel on their presentations by the staff of Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC). At the event, presentations will be limited to just five minutes and will be followed by five minutes of Q&A. The event will also include a panel discussion, networking reception, and sponsor exhibit booths. For additional information on the event and/or how to submit an RFI please visit http://www.tagonline.org/ConnectGA.php. The deadline for submitting an RFI is 5 p.m. October 13.
Connecting Georgia’s Companies is the result of a partnership between the Georgia CIO Leadership Association (GCLA) and the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG). For the participating CIOs it is a unique opportunity to hear from TAG-Member vendor companies based here in Georgia.
Program information can be found online at http://www.tagonline.org/connectga.php Questions should be directed to Amanda Shook at or 404-920-2023.

On behalf of TAG’s Breakfast Series program, I would like to invite you to join us for a presentation given by Bruce Davidson, Deputy Director of the Office of SAFETY Act Implementation, Science and Technology Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security.
Mr. Davidson will highlight the SAFETY Act, which ensures that the threat of liability does not deter potential manufacturers or sellers of anti-terrorism technologies from developing, deploying, and commercializing products and services that could save lives. Developers or producers of technologies or services intended to prevent, detect, identify, or deter acts of terrorism or limit the harm such acts might otherwise cause, may not know that their company may be eligible for critical risk management and legal liability protections authorized by this important Act of Congress. This presentation will provide information on the nature and scope of these benefits, and the criteria and process used to determine whether your products or services might qualify to receive them.
Please pre-register today at http://www.tagonline.org/breakfastseries.php!

It’s hard to believe that we are already beginning to prep for the 2009 Session of the Georgia General Assembly. Sine Die (the final day of adjournment) feels like just yesterday, yet here we are setting our 2009 State Legislative Agenda.
Earlier this week, TAG’s Government Relations Task Force held it’s second meeting for the year. We are very fortunate to have quite a remarkable group of individuals that have graciously agreed to serve TAG by providing us with their expertise as it pertains to science and technology policy here in the state. As TAG’s Director of Government Relations, I greatly value their input and look forward to working with them in the upcoming months ahead as we solidify TAG’s Legislative Agenda and proceed to the Gold Dome.
It should be an interesting Session, with an array of important issues to address (i.e. budget, trauma centers, etc) in the short window of 40 legislative days.
Stay tuned for further information as we progress forward. . .

I’m the new kid on the block—TAG’s latest hire, replacing Wylly Harrison as TAG’s Director of Government Relations. Wylly has accepted a job offer with a consulting company representing various companies on the state level here in Georgia.
When shadowing Wylly my first week, it became evident that I have BIG shoes to fill.
For those of you who did not meet Wylly, Wylly was responsible for laying the foundation/framework for this position and the growth of government relations here at TAG. Within 12 months, he promoted TAG’s name under the Gold Dome, created TAG’s Government Relations Task Force, scheduled exciting keynote speakers for TAG’s Breakfast Series and Featured Speakers programs, developed sound relationships with elected officials and state agencies and helped to create TAG’s policy platform, which will be the basis for setting TAG’s State Legislative Agenda for the 2009 Session.
Again, BIG shoes.
Nevertheless, I’m here to continue down the path that Wylly started, and I hope I do not disappoint! The 2009 Session is rapidly approaching, and I am bracing for the long road ahead! Should you have any questions as it pertains to government relations, feel free to send an email my way or give me a call. I’d be happy to help address any questions or concerns you may have!
I look forward to working with you all in the future!

Neat Tools on the Interweb
Have you checked out Google Maps lately? I know that online mapping/direction websites are nothing new but I think that Google has a couple of pretty cool additions that I wanted to share with you.
The first feature has been around for some time but is getting better and better every day. This is the addition to photos on most of the maps. This feature is awesome! I can actually see the streets of where I am going which is great if you are like me and rely primarily on landmarks to get you from point A to point B. One example is this link, if you rotate around, will let you see my beautiful sorority house on Georgia Tech’s campus. I really like this addition but imagine I will use it more for fun and less for my maps.
The second addition that Google has made is its new “Public Transit” feature. This allows you to ‘map’ your trip using all the available public transportation services and even gives you bus/train departure times. If it makes since for you to use MARTA, I encourage you to check it out.
The last thing that I wanted to mention isn’t a Google tool but is on Weather.com. It’s the “What to Pack” at The Weather Channel online (http://www.weather.com) I used this tool for my trip to North Carolina this past weekend I think it could definitely come in handy – especially if you are traveling somewhere you aren’t familiar with. Weather.com’s neat little application is within their Vacation and Travel guide. The tool asks you when and where you are going and then provides you with drag-and-drop options to create a custom packing list. The application also checks the weather also and will remind you to pack an umbrella if it is going to rain and sunscreen if it will be sunny.

TAG is planning a staff retreat in July where we will participate in White Water Rafting. I figured that I really dont want to drown..especially right after my birthday. So I am taking classes to learn to swim...I think I once knew how to do it as a child but I have been out of practice for a very long time.
I dont have a fear of the water and my instructor says I am doing very well. I will have to work on the strengthing my legs as I experience fatigue in kicking. This is a nice addition to my walks.

I have to confess that this is my first experience blogging. All afternoon, I’ve been going back and forth between this and other projects, each time returning to a blank screen. But look! There are words now!
In my first two months at TAG, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of our members as well as welcoming some new members. Last week (Wednesday, June 18 to be exact), TAG held Q2 Orientation at Choicepoint in Alpharetta. This was my first Orientation of many and I was so pleased with the turnout and the great response we received from the new and non TAG members. I was also Whew… I made it through my first blog. Many more to come!
