Fulfilling the “P” in Portability (HIPAA Regulations) for Patients and Providers

A Healthcare and IT Whitepaper

Executive Summary

With a growing, aging population, the tightening of a qualified labor pool and market, and an increasing trend of heavier documentation, providers and healthcare organizations are finding themselves less able to continually provide high quality care and more often swimming in the sea of required forms, increasing paperwork and inefficient processes and communications. HIPAA regulations, while the intent was to increase information and security to allow patients to gain control and visibility over their healthcare records, are now increasing the burden on all parties involved as the fear of processes bogs response and actions. As Portability and Accessibility are key areas of HIPAA regulations, the current processes and offerings in the market are not only slowing this effort, but are becoming more of an obstacle and risk factor for all parties involved. HIPAA has been blamed for not only increasing costs and complications for practitioners, but also harming patient care by limiting the very information that it is to help enable and protect.

To date, current practice management solutions and processes have been reviewed for specific regulatory compliance “spot checks”: are records turned away so that last names are not visible?; are confirmation calls completed away from a listening waiting room?; do systems have a password? To date a full solution to address the spirit (if not the letter) of HIPAA regulations as well as provider and patient information needs is still a fairly raw and new market area. With a blend of best practices and processes, integrated full-view technology and unified communications, the “P” in HIPAA for Portability may finally be addressed.
